This page contains information about restrictions on Merits and Powers (Disciplines, Arcana, Gifts, etc.) for your PC. Everything on this page applies to all PC's in all Genres, regardless of what type of character you are making.

Anything specific to only one genre is on the individual Genres Rules Page. Be sure to read both before submitting a sheet.

MERITS - POWERS: This section details requirements for these items on your character sheet.

[1] GENRE-RESTRICTED Merits/Powers:

You may not use Merits/Powers such as those which ONLY appear in a "Splat" book and never in the main edition, unless you are playing the exact character class for whom it was created. For example, if there were to be a "Ventrue only" merit of some kind, and it is not a merit in any main VtR sourcebook other than a Ventrue Clan book, you cannot have it unless you play a Ventrue, not just a vampire.

[2] RESTRICTED/OVERUSED/ABUSED Merits/Powers:

Those who already have them, should we issue a moratorium on them, may keep them, but no new PCs may have them until it is lifted.

Moratoriums on Genre-Specific Merits/Powers will be posted on the Genres Rules Page. Restricted Merits/Powers used in all genres are posted below:

AUGUST 2008: Until further notice, the following are Forbidden in ALL genres:

  • FLAW: Psychopath

  • FLAW: Sociopath

  • MERIT: Eidetic Memory

  • MERIT: Encyclopedic Knowledge

  • MERIT: Spetznaz Knife Fighting

  • MERIT: Striking Looks

  • VICE: Lust

  • VICE: Wrath

[3] CROSS-GENRE Merits/Powers:

You may not cross Merits/Powers from one genre to another (such as using a specifically Mage- or Were-only Merit for a Vampire PC.) It must appear somewhere in some book for the genre you are playing, to be able to use it.

The exception to this is obviously Mortals. Mortals may use any non-supernatural Merits, Flaws or Powers, in any books for genres that have mortal PC's. This is covered in more detail on the Mortal Rules Page.

[4] MERITS / POWERS TIED TO ANOTHER PC MUST BE EXPLAINED IN DETAIL:

If you put a Merit/Power on your sheet that needs an explanation or a connection to an existing NPC or especially another PC, you need to explain details in your Background.

For example, if you put in Allies or Contacts, we're going to want to know who they are, how you know them, etc. If you are hunted by another PC, why? If you know a secret or they know yours, how?
